Health Coaching is a Powerful Life Skill
I am recently retired from health coaching and now want to use this forum to share what I have learned about what helps people create change to improve their health - and lives!
99% of health care is self-care!! You see a doctor - or other medical professional - they tell you that to do ….. and then you go home, you go to work, you take care of your family, and you try to take care of yourself. It’s now up to you to follow up on what you were advised to do.
You may know what to do (i.e., what the doctor said), but the how is usually what’s missing. How can I motivate myself to move more or eat better? How do I find a way to de-stress? What can help me better cope?
And this is where I get really excited. The health coaching tools and skills I will share here are life skills anyone can learn and put into play. You can be your own health coach. You can improve your self-care. You can achieve your health goals.
Achieving your goals is not about willpower. It is about how you harness your dreams and aspirations to create a plan of action that makes sense for you, right now. I will go through the skill set and tool kit you can use to coach yourself. And, if you’d like to do a deeper dive, I provide a summary of the theories and science behind health coaching, along with resources to further your knowledge.
And, yes, a disclaimer: what you will find here is NOT medical advice. No health coach should ever diagnose or prescribe. Health coaches do not give medical advice. If a health coach hears something concerning - like, high blood pressure readings, high blood sugars, mental health concerns, an iffy gut or food allergy - the appropriate thing for them to do is suggest you see a medical professional.
